routine maintenance

weekly procedures;

The following tasks are to be carried out every Friday at 4:30pm.

  1. run a full system AV scan
  2. check and process any quarantined files
  3. clean registry
  4. run chkdsk

1. run a full system AV scan

complete

To do this enter AVG's Advanced Interface (shown right) and click the 'Test Manager' option in the menu. The following options will then drop down:

Double-click on the Detailed Complete Test and the test will begin. This test is more detailed and is therefore slower than the usual complete test. This is worth while; some viruses are very good at disguising themselves from scanners. This option should sniff them all out.

2. check and process any quarantined files

In the anti-virus solution that is installed on John's workstation the place where any infected files is stored, is called the 'Virus Vault'. Open the AVG Control Centre and right click on the virus vault and select open from the list.

Then another window will open, shown right displaying the contents of the vault. In the example there are no files present. If there where any present you have the following three options:

  1. Wipe
  2. Clean
  3. Restore

If the file is not important then delete it. If it is, try to clean it and then restore it. Use your common sense.

3. clean registry

In all versions of Windows, the Registry can accumulate obsolete and nonfunctioning entries. Older versions of Windows, in particular, were notorious for this, often ending up with Registries containing huge numbers of erroneous entries. This slowed computer operations; and could even lead to crashes. To clean John's system's registry, use TweakNow RegCleaner, which is some freeware that is already installed on his machine. Below is a screenshot of the main interface:

reg cleaner

Press the Clean Now button and the program will then scan the registry...

scan complete

After the scan is complete, click view details of the problem(s) found and then delete the files that are safe to delete. This will increase the speed of the system, and will stop a large build of useless registry files.

4. run chkdsk

This program verifies the basic health of the hard drives in John's system. To run chkdsk Start > Run type chkdsk into the 'Open' command line and press the [OK] button.

checkdisk

This will start the scan, shown below. When the scan is complete the program will recover or repair any problematic files.

chkdisk

The terminal will close automatically, when chkdsk is complete.
