Assessment of effectiveness
Using the company web server's built-in Urchin® statisical facility, I have been able ascertain how effective each of the measures actually were. As is clearly seen in the graph above, there has been a huge jump in the number of hits during the time period of 21st October 2006 and 28th October 2006.
This time period was the week that the two measures were implemented.
The effectiveness of search engine submission
The web site's design was assessed and improved on the 24th Of October. It was also submitted to all of the main search engines on the same date. The statistics would indicate that there was a small but significant increase by over 400 hits that day.
However, I do not believe that this measure has been extremely effective due to the fact that there is just so much competition on each of the search engines for clicks. Maybe implementing Google Adwords is required after all even though it will cost.
The effectiveness of Ryan's blog
This measure was implemented the day after search engine optimisation and has completely transformed visitor numbers. The day Ryan's blog was re-located and went online hits reached just over 3,000. This is truly a remarkable result!
To keep hits at this level Ryan will have to produce a steady stream of content. I wouldn't surprised to see later that hits increase everytime he submits a new article.
evaluation of click paths
As is not suprising, the majority of our visitors either download one of the feeds or enter our site at the blog's index page. Some then continue to view other pages. If this is done, the most common path is from the blog to the site map.
overall effect
I am especially pleased that I chose to integrate Ryan's blog into PSD's web site, it has had a massive effect and as the word spreads and his articles are refered and linked to, new visitors should begin to appear. Without implementing this measure the number of hits would be extremely low in comparison.
